Governor Diri Reaffirms PDP’s Strength in Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has assured party members and supporters that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains united and firmly in control in the state, dismissing speculations of internal discord.

Speaking during the PDP State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Monday at the party’s secretariat in Yenagoa, Governor Diri emphasized that the PDP has been the dominant political force in Bayelsa, having produced numerous officeholders, including a former Nigerian President.

He urged party faithful to remain focused and not be swayed by misinformation or attempts to sow division.

“Our party is alive and well in Bayelsa State. We have never lost an election here, and PDP remains the only viable platform for those who seek meaningful political advancement,” he said. “For those already thinking about 2027, the best political home remains the PDP.”

Addressing concerns regarding the South-South PDP zonal congress, Governor Diri clarified that the exercise had yet to be conducted.

He explained that the congress, initially scheduled for February 22, was postponed after the four PDP governors in the zone formally requested a date adjustment from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

He dismissed reports of a congress in Calabar, stating that the PDP leadership had rejected such claims and would announce a new date in due course.

“Let’s set the record straight—no valid zonal congress has been held. When the time is right, the national leadership will schedule it in agreement with the zonal leaders,” Diri stated.

Meanwhile, political leaders from Ogbia Local Government Area have issued an apology to the governor and the PDP over the actions of the suspended zonal legal adviser, Barr. George Turnah.

Hon. Gabriel Ogbara, Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, speaking on behalf of Ogbia leaders, described Turnah’s actions as regrettable and assured the party that his conduct did not reflect the character of their people. He appealed for forgiveness and reaffirmed Ogbia’s loyalty to the PDP.

During the meeting, the PDP State Executive Council unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. The motion was moved by Hon. Oforji Oboku, a member of the House of Representatives, and seconded by State Assembly Leader Hon. Monday Obolo.

PDP Chairman in the state, Solomon Agwana, lauded Governor Diri for fostering unity and delivering infrastructural projects across Bayelsa. He called on members to continue rallying behind the administration to sustain the state’s development.

Also speaking, PDP State Secretary Gesiye Isowo praised the governor’s achievements, noting that his performance had strengthened the party’s campaign prospects for future elections.

The meeting was attended by top party stakeholders, including Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Senator Benson Agadaga (Bayelsa East), Hon. Mitema Obordor (Ogbia Federal Constituency), two former deputy governors—Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd) and Rt. Hon. Werinipre Seibarugu—as well as PDP South-South Zonal Secretary, Prof. Felix Omemu, local government chairmen, and other key party figures.
